"Woah.." Nightfrost mewed as he watched a small minnow tickled his wet paws. How had he ended up sleeping by the river's edge? Cool water lapped at his paws, sending an icy shock through his sore and aching body. The battle had been extremely exhausting, and the slumber on the rocky riverbank had not helped him physically at all. Scenes shot through through his brain, replaying over and over the trauma of yesterday. The sun peaked through the barrier of trees, momentarily blinding him with such a ferocity that it knocked him off his paws and sent him splashing into the jagged shallows of the stream. Then, he realized with a shoch, that it had been he who had walked down to the river to wash off his aching paws. He must have hoped that the chilliness would have numbed his paws and taken away the pain that rushed trough them. A deep red gash, not yet all the way crusted over, contrasted extremely against his dark pelt. Slowly, he pushed himself onto his paws, and whiskers dripping, headed back slowly to the camp.

Grimjaw awoke with a loud gasp and his breathing was rapid for a few minutes. Fire shot through his body as his eyes opened, taking in the darkness. Once his eyes began to focus, a light appeared not far away. The stench of blood pierced his nose and he grimaced. Trying to get up, he strained his shoulders and legs and willed them to hold up. The fire burned hotter and hotter and the pain was too much. He collapsed back on the ground with a thud and a faint hiss of frustration.

A small tortiseshell she-kit bounced around the nursery, eyes sparkling, ears twiching, and her whole body almost quivering with excitement. Her small, stubby claws stuck out slightly even when they were unsheathed, ripping apart the moss ball she was batting around with a swift paw. A beam of sunlight cur across the floor, and Hazelkit dropped the ball, as if suddenly remembering about camp. Looking around, she noticed Echostar and crept up on her, pouncing and biting her tail like a true warrior.

Monarchwing stopped crying. "You're awake...." she meowed without even looking at Grimjaw. "What's going to happen to us?" she meowed, anxiety piercing her voice.

Growled faintly again, but gave up trying to get up. "I don't know." he replied, his voice gruff and a little raspy. "I really don't know."
Echostar whipped around to find Hazelkit 'mauling' her tail. She quickly flicked it out of the kit's mouth, sending her rolling onto her back. "Hazelkit," she growled, "I don't have time for nonsense today. Go back to the nursery." She padded off to the medicine cat's den without looking back at the confused kit.

The small kit looked back at the leader, hurt and confusion glinting in her eyes. What was the matter with a little playing? It wasn't like there was any other kit to play with.... Her tail lowered, she slowly sulked back to the empty nursery, stopping at the entrance to roll onto her belly and soak uo the last few drops of sunlight.
--
Nightfrost paddled into camp, dripping wet from his snooze in the river. Ignoring snide remarks from his clanmates, he paddled over to the medicine cat's den to see if they could do anything about his scratch.

Monarchwing struggled to lift her head so she could get a better view of Grimjaw. "How's your pain?" she meowed, wincing and having to lay back down. This was terrible. "Mine hurts almost as bad as when I lost....." she stopped tears coming back into her unclosed eye. She buried her face in her paws, wanting to shrivel up in a dark corner and die.

Grimjaw blinked, confused at first by Monarchwing's sudden breakdown. He remember what she was talking about, or rather, not talking about. He waited until her sobs had begun to slow down before he replied. "It kills is the best way to describe it," he mewoed gruffly. Even simply talking hurt and was getting more annoyed at the pain than anything. He gave up trying to get up and just sighed, grimacing as the pain flooded again and again, getting hotter and more intense with each wave.

Monarchwing's breaths came in slow and in ripples as she finished crying. "I'm sorry...." she meowed, knowing he didn't want to talk anymore. But now more than anytime, she needed someone to talk to....

Echostar padded into the den. Her gaze was on the floor and her face was grim. She looked up and a small smile curved her lips. Both of the warriors were alive and breathing. She padded faster until she reached Monarchwing. "How are you feeling?" she whispered, trying her best to not sound worried are scared.

Monarchwing looked up, tears still glistening in her eyes. "I- I can't move....it hurts!!!...." she screeched as she tred to look up into her leaders eyes. Pain rippled through her spine and racked her body. She shivered and let out a sound so utterly unbearable she saw Grimjaw cringe...a very rare occasion.

Echostar's eyes shot wide. "No! Don't move!" she yowled, placing a gentle paw on Monarchwing's good shoulder. "Do not move!" she repeated, this time with more emphasis and control. "You need rest, both of you." she said, looking up at Grimjaw. He was laying on his side and scarcely breathing.
Grimjaw took in a sharp breath as another wave of heat and pain tore through his body. He gritted his teeth harder and harder to keep from screeching, for that waves came faster and faster. Fearing he would break a tooth he stopped only for a moment. Too soon he stopped and he let out a sharp bark of agony. The waves stopped for a moment and he tried to breath regularly, but his ribs wouldn't let him. Being tossed again and again to the ground and into the trees by the foxes had broken some of his ribs. They carved inward, piercing dangerously close to his organs and squishing his lungs. He took a sharp breath once more and tried to look up at his leader and Monarchwing. He had to be strong for his clan. Weakness was not an option.

Monarchwing stopped. "Have you found one yet?" she asked Echostar. After seeing the completely and utter confused look in her eyes she sighed. "Have you found a medicine cat yet? Grimjaw and I won't be around much longer if you don't" she rasped.

Echostar's gaze dropped to the ground and she sighed deeply. "No," she meowed softly. "I have not." She looked back at Monarchwing and a spark of pain and pity shot through her as she stared at the helpless she-cat. "There is only one other thing I can do to save you and Grimjaw," she rasped, sounding suddenly old and weak. "We have to ask help from another clan."

Hazelkit bounced around idily with an old moss ball, her claws curling around it and twising it upwards into the air. Leaping and catching it with her small teeth, she glanced around her bleak surroundings. No one seemed to pay attention to the kit. Curoiusly, she looked around the seemingly deserted camp to see Nightfrost walk up, whiskers dripping and dark fur plastered to his body. She eagerly ran up to him, and her nose wrinkled up upon not scenting the usual Duskclan scent. "Where have you been?" She curoiusly asked, like an old nursery queen after her kits. "Not now, Hazelkit. Why don't you go back to the nursery?" grumpily, the tom pushed his way around the disappointed kit, her eyes round with hurt. Didn't he realize that there wasn't anyone in the nursery? She had tried to be good, to behave like Echostar instructed. But the curiosity got the best of her. She just had to find out what was going on around the solemn camp. Hazelkit tailed Nightfrost, right into what would be the medicine cat's den, the faint scent of herbs long gone lingering in the cool air.
