Echostar's Kithood
"Shuush! Watch this Thornkit."
"He he he. Wow. I can't believe she hasn't noticed."
"Me neither."
"Hey, Smokekit. Watch this!"
"Oof! Hey! What was that for?!" Echokit hissed. She sprung to her feet and glared at her brothers. They were rolled over on their backs and laughing at the enterence of the nursery. Her mouth creased into a hard line and her eyes narrowed as her brothers continued laughing. "What's so funny?" she growled, growing annoyed. Finally, Smokekit managed to stop for a second to say, "Look at your face!", before going back to laughing. Echokit crossed her eyes to try and see her nose. She jumped back in disgust, knocking off the mouse tail. At the same time a small squeak mixed with a hiss escaped her mouth, creating a shrill sound that vibrated through the front of the den. Smokekit and Thornkit stopped their giggling once the soundwave hit their tiny, fragile ears. "OW!" they both yowled. They cringed and extended their claws, scratching at the ground to try and distract themselves from the temporary pain ringing in their ears. Thornkit was the first to stand back up. His lips curled back into a snarl and his fur stood on end. "Echokit!" he growled. "That hurt! What did mom tell you about that!" Echokit ignored the annoying bundle of fur shouting at her and licked her paw, swiping it over her nose a few times. Now that that bad mouse tail smell was gone and her fur was neatly back in place, she glared up at her brother. "I didn't do it on purpose," she retorted. Her mind began racing with how to get back at her brothers, but she knew that no matter how she accomplished it, it would be a prank way better than anything those two mouse-brains could even think of, much less pull off. But Thornkit didn't give Echokit much time to think, because suddenly he charged and then pounced. Within seconds the two were wrestling on the ground and scraps of moss were flying. Smokekit finally got to his feet and tried to help his brother in the fight. He ran at Echokit and barreled into her flank, but he only managed to slide her back feet a few pawsteps. He was quickly kicked away by Echokit's back right leg and landed about a one and a half tail-lengths away, almost to his sleeping mother. By the time Smokekit was back on his feet, Echokit had Thornkit pinned on his back. She had knocked the breath out of him when she pinned him but when Thornkit tried to kick her off, she lost her balance and her front paws landed on his stomach. She hadn't meant to hurt him, but since she was so much bigger than her brothers, an accident like this was inevitable. A high-pitched yowl escaped Smokekit's mouth and suddenly Ravenpelt's bright green eyes opened. "What's going on!" she growled, pushing herself to her paws. The two wrestling kits immediately sprang away from each other. Echokit sat down and faced her mother while Thornkit stayed on his feet and hissed at his sister. Smokekit scampered over to his brother's side, the side furthest away from Echokit, and glared at his sister. "I asked what was going on," Ravenpelt repeated, staring at her kits. The brothers seemed oblivious to what their mother was saying but Smokekit was the first to speak. "Echokit woke up and pounced on Thornkit. She was on his stomach and he couldn't breathe," he said, glancing at his brother. Ravenpelt looked down at her daughter, her eyes revealing scorn, and Echokit's eyes went wide and her jaw dropped as she returned her mother's angered gaze. "Did not!" she wailed. "Smokekit put a mouse tail on my face while I was asleep and then one of them jumped on me! I accidently squeaked when I saw the tail and it hurt their ears and then Thornkit charged at me! They did it, not me!" Ravenpelt gritted her teeth and closed her eyes tight, as did Smokekit and Thornkit. "Please, Echokit, don't shout like that. You know what your voice does and it hurts other cats. You have to learn to control it or you, and other cats around you, could get in trouble or even be put in danger by it. I know you're only a kit but work on it now and it'll becoming easier to control as an apprentice." The scorn in her eyes melted and was replaced with compassion as she gazed back at her daughter. The kit's head was hung low and her little ears were flattened against her head. She looked as if she were about to endure a claw to the face. Ravenpelt padded forward. She wrapped her tail around her kit and gently licked the top of her head. "I didn't mean to upset you," she cooed. "And I don't mean to sound as if you beautiful little voice is a hazard. It's a gift from StarClan. You simply must learn to use it wisely." Another lick swiped over Echokit's head and she looked up to see her mother's eyes, though the tone of her voice said it all. She nodded and did her best to smile though she could tell that behind her mother, her brothers were glaring at her. "Why don't you three go outside to play now," Ravenpelt meowed, looking over her shoulder at her other two kits. "Just don't hurt each other this time." The brothers nodded and rushed out the nursery side by side, glaring harshly at their sister as they passed. Ravenpelt stood up and padded back to her nest. She quickly got comfortable and fell right back asleep. Echokit watched her mother disappear into the back of the nursery, her black fur melting into darkness that preceeded her. I'll show her. I'll control this stupid voice of mine and I'll be the best and most feared cat in the clan. In all the clans! Her eyes narrowed as she got up and padded outside. I won't just show her. I'll show my mouse-brained brothers too. I'll especially show them.... The sunlight drove into her eyes and Echokit blinked, trying to let her eyes adjust to the bright light. When she could see again she automatically searched for her brothers and found them near the fresh kill pile, batting a big ball of moss back and forth. She smiled, an idea forming in her mind. I'll show them right now that they shouldn't mess with me. Very casually, she strolled over to the fresh-kill pile and began sniffing at it, making it look like she was searching for something to eat. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched all her brothers' movements. Thornkit swats the ball to Smokekit. Smokekit catches it with his paw. He swats it back. The moss is gaining speed. Thornkit scoops the ball into the air with his paw when he swats it. Smokekit misses it but gets to the ball fast enough that it keeps most of its momentum. He tries to copy Thornkit's last move. The moss flies higher than they both expected. NOW! Echokit leaps across the ground. Three bounds, her little claws tearing up the dirt. She throws her weight to her back legs and lauches herself into the air. She twists her body sideways as she nears the moss ball, catching it with her teeth. The rest of her body follows and she lands gracefully, moss in her mouth and pride in her eyes. Echokit turns to look at her brothers. There they are, jaws dropped, eyes wide, staring at her. They quickly glanced at each other before refocusing on Echokit. She had done it. A smirk appeared on her face and though the moss was still in her mouth, her brothers clearly saw it. Their gazes fell to the ground before they turned tail and padded away together, back to the nursery. Echokit padded after them, then hesitated. She stopped at the nursery enterence, dropped the moss ball, and gave herself a quick little bath to straighten her fur. She needed to look presentable when she told her mother why she was carrying the moss.
